As an Edmonton photographer, I’ve always believed in the importance of family pictures, and that the images we create together are more than just photos— they’re tiny time capsules that tell the story of your family’s love. But did you know that where you place those images in your home can actually impact your child’s emotional development?
Research shows that children who grow up in homes where family photos are prominently displayed benefit in some truly beautiful ways. And as a mom myself, this makes me fall in love with family photography even more.
Psychologist David Krauss, one of the early voices in photo therapy, put it best:
“It is so helpful for children to see themselves as a valued and important part of that family unit.”
When kids see themselves on the walls of their home— wrapped in mom’s arms, laughing with their siblings, dancing with dad— it sends a powerful, undeniable message:
You are seen. You are loved. You are an important part of this family.
Photographs give children a tangible way to understand their own story.
These images are not just simple snapshots— they’re visual anchors that remind them who they are and where they come from.
In times of change, challenge, or even just a tough school day, being surrounded by those images can bring a sense of comfort and security.
Seeing positive images of themselves with loved ones reinforces a child’s sense of connection. It nurtures emotional memory, builds empathy, and supports their developing sense of self.
Even a simple photo of a snuggle or a joyful moment with the ones they love most can help children remember:
“I’m safe. I’m loved. I belong.”
When you walk past a framed photo and say, “Remember this day?”, you’re not just reminiscing. You’re helping your child develop language, storytelling skills, and emotional awareness.
These little conversations are how family traditions are passed down through the generations, and connections among loved ones are deepened.
When children feel more deeply rooted in their family identity, they’re often more likely to align with the values and expectations of the family. A visual reminder of their place in the family can gently influence how they carry themselves at home, at school, and beyond.
So What Does This Mean for Us?
It means that printing your photos— and giving them a special place in your home— isn’t just about décor. It’s about connection. It’s about surrounding your child with constant, visual reminders of your steady love.
Whether it’s a framed print in the hallway, a gallery wall in the family room, or an album set lovingly beside their bed, these photos are like daily love notes that say:
“You matter here.”
If you’re ready to create something beautiful for your walls— or to refresh the frames already filled with love— I’d be honoured to help tell your family’s story.
